If you want to get involved in Social Media and want to see some long-term rewards, a
great rule of thumb to follow is LISTEN. Listen to: what others are saying; what their
problems are; what they want to find out and know; what they are sharing—then you
can begin to build relationships by communicating and sharing solutions. Getting
involved in Social Media is not about selling your products or services.

Comments

I agree that listening is important, critical to social media. But it's not ALL or ONLY about listening, because if all you're doing is listening then you are only reacting.  
 
You also need to be proactive, lead the way to developing relationships, and after listening, you need to create the content and offer the value for your audience. FWIW.

Hi Davina - great comment thanks for that. My comment on building relationships - in order to build relationships you 'listen' and provide 'solutions' - over the long run, not short term.
